"The world of humanity has two wings – one is women and the other men. Not until both wings are equally developed can the bird fly. Should one wing remain weak, flight is impossible."
Abdu'l-Baha

Equality of Women and Men

The equality of women and men is a fundamental tenet of Baha'i belief. For full equality to be realized, priority must be given to the education of women, starting with more investment in the education of daughters.

Women's struggle for recognition and full participation in their religious communities has always been difficult, often more difficult than in the secular world. Not so in the Baha'i community.

The teachings of Baha'u'llah are unequivocal in asserting the full spiritual and social equality of women. Moreover, the institutions of the Baha'i Faith have a moral obligation to support and encourage the full participation of women in leadership and decision making and all other aspects of Baha'i community life.

A recent survey of the participation of women in Baha'i community life found women well represented in leadership positions in Baha'i communities the world over and illustrates the progress that is being made to overcome traditional attitudes and strong cultural norms.
